Hailed as an astonishingly deft debut when it arrived in 1990, this look at young members of the debutante society in New York revealed Whit Stillman to be an intelligent writer of dialogue and social situations. Crafted with equal parts comedy and romance, the film follows a middle-class young man as he weaves his way into the contemporary New York aristocracy. Initially nothing more than a casual observer of this unfamiliar group, the young man eventually befriends them, leading to thoughtful conversations and clashes of young minds. Stillman’s film was one of the most convincing reasons to get excited about the future of independent filmmaking in the early 1990s, and he’ll be with us to reminisce about the film in a post-screening Q&A.
